Since my blog has been catching on recently, I decided to add a fun twist – the BoB (BabeofBusiness) Coolness Counts awards. Each month, I’ll put the spotlight on four lucky newcomers worthy of the honor of being dubbed a Cool Start-Up. So without further ado, here are your winners for January 2009:

1st Place: VerTerra

Did you know that ‘saves me from having to wash the dishes’ plastic, foam and paper disposable dinnerware constitutes more than 1,750,000 tons of landfill waste a year - leading to greater greenhouse emissions and depletion of our most precious natural resources? Well, thanks to a start-up known as VerTerra, you now have an environmentally-friendly alternative. VerTerra (true to the Earth), a “hyper-green, New York City start-up” (Time Magazine), offers 100 percent natural and biodegradable dishware that can be reused or simply disposed of after use. Made from the fallen leaves of Palm trees and without chemicals, plastics or waxes, VerTerra’s plates biodegrade in only six weeks. That means they’re good for the environment. They’re also oven, microwave and freezer safe. Now that’s a Cool Start-Up.
